The Postulator and the vice-Postulator

The opening ceremony

In response to these many requests from the entire world the go-ahead given with the Nihil  Obstat of the Roman Congregation for the Causes of Saints, the cardinal archbishop of Paris, Mgr. André Vingt-Trois, decided to open the diocesan enquiry on 28th June 2007, 13 years after the death of Jérôme Lejeune.

The opening ceremony for the diocesan enquiry took place at the House of the Vicars General of the diocese, in the presence of about fifty members of the famiy and of the Association of Friends of Professor Jérôme Lejeune. In fact the diocesan enquiry always takes place in the diocese where the person died, henceforward to be known as the Servant of God and the Cause is supported by a body known as an ‘agent’’, in this case the Association of Friends of Professor Jérôme Lejeune.

By 28th June the Archbishop of Paris, Mgr Vingt Trois, had appointed Mgr Jérôme Beau, Vicar General, to represent him.

In the course of this meeting the members of the tribunal, the historical committee experts, the postulator RP Jean-Charles Nault, of the Benedictine Abbey of Saint-Wandrille, and the vice-postulator Aude Dugast took the traditional oath on the Gospels.

The postulator RP Jean-Charles Nault read the request he had addressed to Mgr Vingt Trois. In it he said, in particular, that “the reputation for sanctity of Professor Jérôme Lejeune is not ceasing to spread and several requests are coming in , for the cause of his canonisation to be introduced, not only from France, but Europe as well, and North and South America.

He recalled some biographical details concerning Professor Lejeune : « A doctor and a research worker, the founder of modern genetics, he de voted himself without stint to his patients, impelled by Christ’s words : ‘Whatever you do for the least of my brethren, you do it for me’ ».

He furthermore emphasized the point that « Professor Lejeune’s testimony is truly prophetic and vitally urgent ». And he explained : « At this time, when society is putting in question the most fundamental truths about the human person, he remains an impassioned and courageous witness to truth and to charity ».Mgr Beau added this : « Jérôme Lejeune was utterly faithful to his pledge as a Servant of Life, one who did not give way under pressure or retreat before obstacles. He knew how to put his immense intelligence to the service of God and man, especially the weakest of us, and by so doing incurring the risk of rejection by his colleagues. He used his ability exclusively for bearing witness to the Truth, by reconciling faith and reason, in the eyes of the modern world ».

He stressed that « the canonisation of Professor Jérôme Lejeune, a devoted layman, would serve to keep alive his spirit of unconditional service to the Mystery of Life and would provide an example and a model for all those who wish courageously to put their intelligence and especially their scientific competence at the service of the truth and the dignity of the human person. »
